How To Prepare For Your Photo Session

There are several things you can do to better prepare for your photo session. If you stay ready, you don’t have to get ready right? Haha! Of course, when you have your photos taken there are things that you rely on your photographer to do well. These things can consist of posing, lighting and composition. But what can you do to ensure that your photo session goes as planned? Let’s learn what you can do to get the best photos and have a great session.

Here’s a quick list of things that you can do to make your session a success.

Don’t Pick Out Your Clothes Last Minute

I highly recommend making sure that you plan for your photo session in an adequate amount of time before the photo session. Not only does this relieve stress on your part, but it helps your fully envision how you’d like for your photo session to go. Once you now what you wear, it helps to narrow down how you’d like your hair, make up and anything else that goes into your final look. If you plan on changing into multiple outfits, a great tip is always wear the outfit that is most complex first and then follow suit with the rest.

Hair & Makeup

If you’re planning on doing your own hair & makeup or getting it professionally done… I highly suggest planning this out with your photo session in mind. Make sure the makeup artist that is chosen for your photo session will be able to deliver the full look you’re going for.

Stay Hydrated & Rest

Keep your bod happy. Make sure you’re getting enough rest and fluids in your body prior to the photo session (or in general for life). Your body will thank you! Photo sessions can be exhausting. So it’s important to make sure you’re taking care of yourself and that you’re comfortable.

Have A Back-Up Plan

Weather is always unpredictable. Always check the weather the night before. In the event things do to go as a planned, always have an extra outfit or two. Another helpful thing to consider is having a backup location in case the location you were hoping to shoot at is no longer accessible.

Have Clear Expectations

After every photo session be ready with any questions you might have for your photographer. It’s always common to ask how long is the turnaround for your photos and when can you expect to see them. Understanding your photographers process will help aid you, and take away any anxieties you might have. For example, here is my process after a portrait session:

  1. Within 72 hours, the client will chose which photos they would like edited (based on the package chosen).

  2. After these photos are chosen, the photographer (me) will edit the photos. The turnaround for this is 7-10 business days.

  3. Photos will be returned to the client for download and/or printing.

  4. An email will be sent as well to allow for the client to leave any reviews they might have.

That’s all folks! That’s a quick list on how to prepare for your photo session to have the best experience and images possible. Let me know if this information was helpful and feel free to visit my frequently asked questions page for more info.
